How are bones organized?
location: axial or appendicular
shape: long, short, flat, irregular, sesamoid
Long Bones
longer than they are wide; found only in limbs; serve as levers
Short Bones
only in carpal and tarsal; as tall as they are wide; used for fine movement
Flat Bones
flat areas (ribs, skull); site of RBC formation
Irregular Bones

Sesamoid Bones
seed shaped, embedded in muscle tendons, protect tendon from surrounding bone
Osteoblasts
form bone
Osteoclasts
destroy bone
Diaphysis
middle portion of developing bone
Epiphysis
ends of developing bone
Physeal Plate
band of cartilage; weakest spot
Left Humerus vs. Right humerus
greater tubercle is lateral
Left radius vs right radius
styloid process is medial
left ulna vs right ulna
medial coronoid process is larger
