Nervous System Flashcards
Types of Neuron
multipolar, bipolar, and pseudounipolar
Multipolar Neuron
multiple poles. Found in motor neurons
Bipolar Neuron
sensory
Pseudounipolar Neurons
sensory
Ways to classify the nervous system
anatomic or function
Anatomic Classification
central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
Central Nervous System
brain and spinal cord. Encased in bone
Peripheral Nervous System
cranial nerves, spinal nerves, autonomic nervous system
Functional Classification
sensory and motor
Sensory
afferent (toward cell body)
Motor
Efferent (away from cell body)
Efferent Fibers
- general somatic efferent
- general visceral efferent
- special visceral efferent
General Somatic Efferent Fibers
skeletal muscle, in some cranial nerves and all spinal nerves
General Visceral Efferent Fibers
smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands, in some cranial nerves, and all spinal nerves
Special Visceral Efferent Fibers
skeletal muscle on the head with visceral function (digestion and respiration). Found in some cranial nerves
Afferent Fibers
- general somatic afferent
- special somatic afferent
- general visceral afferent
- special visceral afferent
- proprioception
General Somatic Afferent Fibers
pick up stimuli from surface of body (pain, temperature, pressure). Found in CN V and all spinal nerves
Special Somatic Afferent Fibers
special senses (vision, audition). Found in CN II (eye) and CN VII (ear)
General Visceral Afferent Fibers
pick up stimuli from walls of blood vessels and visceral organs. Chemical stimuli. CN VII, CN IX, CN X, and all spinal nerves
Special Visceral Afferent Fibers
taste and smell. CN I = smell. CN VII, CN IX, and CN X = taste
Proprioception
sensory. Body can detect position of the head, limbs, and trunk
