Arthrology Flashcards
Arthrology
study of joints
Types of Joint
fibrous, cartilagenous, synovial
Fibrous Joint
formed by fibrous connective tissue. Designed for stability
Types of Fibrous Joint
suture, gomphosis, syndesmosis
Suture Joint
fibrous joint between the flat bones of the skull
Gomphosis Joint
fibrous joint between teeth and bony sockets
syndesmosis joint
all other fibrous joints (between tibia and fibula, between tarsal/carpal bones)
Cartilagenous Joint
bones joined by cartilage. Designed for stability
Types of Cartilagenous Joint
symphysis, synchondrosis
Symphysis Joint
cartilagenous joint made by fibrocartilage, eventually ossifies with age. Ex: pelvic symphysis, mandibular symphysis, IV disc
Synchondrosis Joint
Cartilagenous joint made of hyaline cartilage (glassy). Temporary Joints. Ex: physeal plates
Synovial Joint
designed for movement. No tissue directly joins the bones where they contact one another. Separated by synovial fluid
Components of Synovial Joint
synovial capsule, joint cavity, synovial fluid, articular cartilage, additional structures
Types of Synovial Capsule
fibrous and membranous
Additional Structures of Synovial Joint
meniscus, fibrocartilagenous plate, intra-articular ligament, extra-capsular ligaments
