Osmosis And Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Gradual movement of particles from places where there are lots if them to places where there are fewer of them.
What is osmosis?
The movement of water, from an area where it is in a higher concentration, across a particularly permeable membrane, to an area where it is in a low concentration.
Diffusion happens in what two states of matter? And why?
Liquids and gasses - because the particles in these substances are free to move about randomly.
In which three ways can substances move in and out of cells?
Diffusion, osmosis and active transport.
Give some examples of some substances that can diffuse through cell membranes…?
Glucose, amino acids, water and oxygen.
Give examples of molecules that can’t diffuse through cell membranes?…
Starch and proteins. - the molecules are too big.
