DNA, Genes And Chromosomes Flashcards
How many chromosomes in total does a human cell nucleus contain?
46 chromosomes
What is the name we give to human body cells?
Diploid - they have two copies of each chromosome arranged in pairs.
What are genes?
Chemical instructions
What is DNA?
A long list of instruction on how to put an organism together and make it work.
Why are proteins important in genes?
- they control most processes in the body
- they determine inherited characteristics e.g. Eye colour and blood type.
What is the structure of DNA?
A DNA molecule has two strands coiled together in the shape of a double helix (two spirals).
What is the name of the chemical that holds the two strands if the DNA molecule together?
Bases.
What are the four different kinds of bases called?
Adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), thymine (T)
Which bases are always paired together?
A-T and C-G. This is complimentary base-pairing.
What type of acid is DNA?
Nucleic acid.
