Osmosis Flashcards

1
Q

What is osmosis?

Q

How does water potential gradient affect water potential?

A
  • Higher the water potential gradient the faster the rate of osmosis.
  • As osmosis takes place, the difference in water potential on either side of the membrane decreases.
  • This results in the rate of osmosis levelling off over time.

Q

How does the thickness of the exchange surface affect water rate of osmosis?

A

• The thinner the exchange surface, the faster the rate of osmosis.

Q

How can you find the water potential of tissues?

A
  • Place cells in a series of solutions of different water potential.
  • Where there is no net gain or loss of water from the cells or tissues, the water potential inside the tissues must be the same as that of the external solution
