Golgi Apparatus & Lysosomes Flashcards

1
Q

What are the functions of the Golgi apparatus?

A
  • Add carbohydrate to proteins to form glycoproteins.
  • Produce secretory enzymes.
  • Transport, modify and store lipids.

Q

What is the function of Golgi Vesicles?

A
  • Store lipids and proteins made by the Golgi apparatus.

* Transports them out of the cell via the cell surface membrane.

Q

How are lysosomes formed?

A

When vesicles produced by the Golgi apparatus contain enzymes such as proteases and lipases.

Q

What are the functions of the lysosomes?

A
  • Hydrolyse material ingested by phagocytic cells, such as white blood cells and bacteria.
  • Release enzymes to the outside of the cell, in order to destroy material around the cell
  • Digest worn out organelles so that the useful chemicals they are made of can be re-used.
  • Completely break down cells after they have died ( auto-lysis ).
