Cell Wall, Ribosomes & Vacuoles Flashcards
What are ribosomes?
Ribosomes are small granules found in all cells.
What are the two types of Ribosome?
- 70s - Found in eukaryotic cells.
* 80s - found in prokaryotic cells, mitochondria and chloroplasts.
What is the function of ribosomes?
Site of protein synthesis.
What is the cell wall?
• A rigid structure that surrounds cells in plants, algae and fungi.
What is the middle lamella?
A think layer which marks the boundary between adjacent cell walls and cements adjacent cell together.
What are the functions of the cell wall?
• Provide mechanical strength in order to prevent the cell bursting under the pressure created by the osmotic entry of water.
What is the vacuole?
• A fluid filled sac bounded by a single membrane.
What is the function of vacuoles?
- Support herbaceous plants, and herbaceous parts of woody plants by making cells turgid.
- Sugars and amino acids may act as a temporary food store.
- Pigments may color petals to attract pollinating insects.
- Stops plants wilting
- Isolation of unwanted chemicals inside the cell.
