Osmosis Flashcards
Osmosis
Osmosis is the net we movement of free water molecules through a partially permeable membrane down a water potential gradient
Osmotic concentration
The osmotic concentration of a solution concerns only those solutes that have osmotic effect
Isotonic solution (Normal): red blood cell
Normal red blood cell
Hypotonic solution (dilute): red blood cell
Swollen red blood cell
Hypertonic solution (concentrated): red blood cell
Shrunken red blood cell
Osmosis in animal cells
Osmosis in animal cells need to be carefully controlled in animal
Osmosis in animal cells: Isotonic
Normal red blood cell
Cell concentration of water inside the cell is the same as outside
Osmosis in animal cells: hypertonic
Low water concentration outside the cell
Water moves out of the cell during osmosis
Osmosis in animal cells: hypotonic
High water concentration outside cell
During osmosis water moves into the cell
Osmosis in plant cells
The plant cell’s shape & size does not change much due to osmotic concentrations owing to its rigid cell wall. It is only the contents that change
Osmosis in plant cells: isotonic
Normal cell
Osmosis in plant cells: hypertonic
Cytoplasm shrinks from cell
Osmosis in plant cells: hypotonic
Normal turgid cell wall
