Osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis
Diffusion of water; net movement of water molecules from high to low concentration through a partially permeable membrane
What is water potential
The tendency of water molecules in a system to move.
How does water potential impact osmosis
net movement of water by osmosis, determined by differences in water potential between two solutions connected by a partially permeable membrane
What is water potential like in an isotonic animal cell
WP outside cell is same as the cell cytoplasm - no net movement of water
What is water potential like in an hypertonic animal cell
WP outside the cell is lower than cell cytoplasm, water has moved out of the cell
What does it mean if water has moved out of the cell
Cell becomes crenated as cytoplasm pulls away from cell membrane
What is water potential like in an hypotonic animal cell
WP outside cell higher than inside cell, water has entered the cell
What happens if water gets in cell
Lysis occurs (burst) as cell has no wall
