Women were taught “lip pointing” with radium for painting by sharpening the tip of the brush by wiping it on lip and eventually many got illness due to radiation exposure
OSHA basic requirement for work related injury
Considered if an event or exposure in the work environment either caused or contributed to the resulting condition or significantly aggravated a pre-existing injury or illness, highly dependent on documentation (injured over the weekend that gets aggravated at work vs injured at work) does not consider commute to work
When is an injury not work related? (9)
- if present in work environment as member of general public rather than employee
- injury or illness involves signs or symptoms that surface at work but arise outside work
- illness or injury results solely from volunteer participation in wellness program
- eating or preparing food or drink for personal consumption
- injury or illness solely result of employee doing personal tasks
- injury result of personal grooming, self medication for non work related condition, or is intentionally self inflicted
- MVA in parking lot while commuting to or from work
- common cold or flu
- mental illness not considered work related typically

- right to work on machines that are safe
- be protected from toxic chemicals
- request an OSHA inspection
- see copies of workplace injury log
- get copies of test results to find hazards in the workplace
