Organisation: The Blood Flashcards
What are the four main components of blood?
The four main components of blood are plasma, white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets.
What part of the blood is plasma?
Plasma is the liquid part of the blood (this is where we find red and white blood cells and platelets).
What are the tiny fragments of cells called in the blood?
The platelets are the tiny fragments of cells in blood.
What is the function of plasma?
The function of the plasma in blood is to transport dissolved substances around the body. Plasma transports soluble digestion products from the small intestine to other organs, transports carbon dioxide from the organs to the lungs to be breathed out and transports the waste product urea from the liver to the kidneys to be excreted in urine.
What is the function of red blood cells?
The function of the red blood cells is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the body cells.
What are the adaptations of red blood cells? (3)
- Red blood cells carry the oxygen-carrying molecule haemoglobin. Haemoglobin combines with oxygen in the lungs to form the molecule oxyhaemoglobin, the red blood cells then travel to the organs where the oxyhaemoglobin releases the oxygen. 2. Red blood cells have no nucleus which means they have more room for haemoglobin. 3. In the centre of the red blood cell there is the shape of a biconcave disc, this shape gives the red blood cells a greater surface area so that the oxygen diffuses in and out quicker.
What is the function of the white blood cells?
The function of the white blood cells it they produce antibodies which fight illness.
What is the function of platelets?
The function of the platelets is to help the blood clot.
