Infection and Response: Malaria Flashcards
Is Malaria a communicable or non-communicable disease?
Malaria is a communicable disease.
What pathogen is Malaria an example of?
Malaria is an example of the protist pathogen.
What are the symptoms of malaria?
The symptoms of malaria are are repeated bouts of fever and can lead to death,
What vector is able to carry and spread malaria?
The mosquito can carry and spread malaria
What is a vector?
A vector is any organism with the ability to carry pathogens from one person to another.
How is malaria spread? (2)
Malaria is spread by mosquitos and it may be also be spread by transfusion of blood from an infected person.
Describe how we can reduce the spread of malaria (3)
We can prevent the spread of malaria by stopping mosquitos from breeding, mosquitos breed in still water, to stop them from breeding we need to find areas of still water and drain them. We could also spray areas of still water with insecticide which kills mosquitos. Lastly, we can sleep under a mosquito net.
Describe the malaria pathogen life cycle
- A person is infected with malaria and is bite by a mosquito.
- The malaria pathogen passes into the mosquito.
- The mosquito now bites a different person and passes the malaria pathogen to them.
Can malaria pass directly from one person to another?
Malaria cannot pass directly from one person to another.
