Cell Biology 3 Osmosis & Active Transport Flashcards
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a higher concentration solution of water (dilute) to a lower concentration of water solution through a partially permeable membrane.
Does osmosis require energy? if so then from where?
Osmosis does not require energy.
What is the name given to a cell that has shrunk?
Flaccid is when a cell has shrunk.
What is the name given to a cell that has expanded and is swollen?
Turgid is when a cell has swollen and expanded.
What is the difference between dilute solutions and concentrated solutions?
A dilute solution contains a high concentration of water whereas a concentrated solution contains a low concentration of water. (in osmosis water diffuses from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution, aka an area of high to an area of low)
What is active transport?
Active transport moves particles from a lower concentration (more dilute) to a more concentrated solution (against the concentration gradient)
Does active transport require energy? if so from where?
Active transport requires energy from respiration.
