Cell Biology Flashcards
What is a eukaryote?
A Eukaryote is a cell that contains its genetic material (DNA) enclosed in a nucleus.
Are animal cells prokaryotes or eukaryotes?
Animal cells are eukaryotes
Are plant cells prokaryotes or eukaryotes?
Plant cells are eukaryotes
Do eukaryotes have a cell wall or a cell membrane or both? (plant and animal)
Eukaryotes: animal cells have a cell membrane, a plant cell has a cell wall and a cell membrane.
What are prokaryotes?
Prokaryotes are bacterial cells in which the genetic material (DNA) is not enclosed in a nucleus.
What are the differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes? (2)
The differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes are:
Eukaryotes have a nucleus whereas prokaryotes do not.
Prokaryotes are much smaller than eukaryotes.
What do plant cells have which animal cells don’t? (3)
Plant cells have a cell wall, permanent vacuole, chloroplasts
What are the similarities between prokaryotes and eukaryotes? (2)
The similarities between eukaryotes and prokaryotes are:
Eukaryotes and prokaryotes both have a cell membrane
Prokaryotes and eukaryotes both have a cytoplasm.
What is the order of magnitude?
The order of magnitude is the approximate size of different objects
1 order of magnitude is 10x
2 order of magnitude is 100x
3 orders of magnitude is 1000x
Do animal cells have a cell wall?
Animal cells do not have a cell wall (they have a cell membrane)
Do plant cells have a cell wall?
Plant cells have a cell wall (they also have a cell membrane)
A fox is around 40cm long. A tick living on the fox is 4mm long. How many orders of magnitude is the fox longer than the tick?
Since the units aren’t the same convert them both into the unit your more comfortable with. 40cm/0.4cm
40/0.4 = 100x
100x is two orders of magnitude
What are the functions of the nucleus?
The functions of the nucleus are to enclose the genetic material (DNA) and control the cell.
What are the functions of the cytoplasm?
The functions of the cytoplasm are to give the cell its shape, its also where chemical reaction in the cell take place
Where do chemical reactions take place in the cell?
The cytoplasm is where the reactions in the cell take place
