New medicines are often extracted from plants
Where is the painkiller aspirin extracted from?
The painkiller aspirin comes from willow tress.
What drug is the fox glow plant used to extract?
The fox grow plant is used to extract the heart drug digitalis
What is the name of the first antibiotic discovered?
The first antibiotic ever discovered is penicillin.
Drugs / new medicines are also extracted from microorganisms. Give on example of this.
An example of a drug which was extracted from a microorganism is penicillin which was discovered in the mould penicillium by Alexander Fleming.
How can we test a new drug?
We can test a new drug by checking the toxicity of a drug, to make sure it is safe for humans. We then need to check that the drug is effective and treats the disease that we are looking at. Finally, we need to work out the best dose of the drug

A placebo is a tablet or injection with no active drug in it.
