What is health
A state of physical and mental wellbeing
What is a non communicable disease
Cannot be spread. Usually last for a long time and get worse slowly
How can diseases interact
Immune system reactions caused by pathogens can trigger allergic reactions such as skin rashes
Mental illnesses such as depression can be caused when somone is suffering from physical health problems
What are 4 factors that can effect health
Diet
Stress
Life situation e.g. if u have access to medicine and healthy food
What is cardiovascular disease
Diseases of the heart or blood vessels
What is coronary heart disease
Coronary arteries get blocked by layers of fatty materials arteries become narrow so blood flow is restricted and there is a lack of oxygen to the heart muscle
Advantages of stents
Last for a long time
Recovery is fairly quick
Disadvantages of stent
Risk of infection from surgery
Risk of patient developing blood clot near the stent. (Thromnosis)
What are statins/ what do they do
Drug
Reduces LDL cholesterol
LDL cholesterol causes fatty acids to deposit inside arteries
Which can lead to coronary heart disease
Advantages of statins
Reduce risk of stroke heart attacks and coronary heart disease
Increase amount of HDL cholesterol which can remove LDL cholesterol
May also help prevent other diseases
Disadvantages of statins
Have to be taken regularly so patient may forget to take them
Side effects may include liver damage kidney failure headaches memory loss
Effect isnt instat. Takes time for their effect to kick in
Advantages of an artificial heart
Less lickly to get rejected because the body doesn’t recognize it as a foreign
Disadvantages of an artificial heart
Surgery can lead to bleeding and infection
Parts of the heart could wear out
Blood doesn’t flow through as smoothly which can lead to blood clots and lead to strokes
Patient has to take drugs to make sure blood doesn’t clot which is a problem if they are involved in an accident where they are bleeding
Uncomfortable
What may go wrong with a valves in the heart
Damaged or weakened by heart attacks, infection, old age
Damage may cause valve tissue to stiffen so it wont open properly
May become leaky so blood flows in both directions
What are biological and mechanical valves
Biological - from other mammals
Mechanical - man made
