Organic Substances Flashcards
Carbohydrates
provide much of the energy cells require, which is stored as reserve energy, and supplies materials to build cell structures
Lipids
not water soluble, contain 3 compounds: phospholipids, fats, and steroids
Fats
primarily used to store energy for cellular activities made of 3 fatty acid chains and 1 glycerol molecule, store more energy than carbs
Phospholipids
similar to fats, but has one less fatty acid chain and instead has a phosphate group which forms the head of the chain and is soluble in water
Steroids
connected rings of carbon atoms, one of the most important steroids is cholesterol (used to synthesize estrogen, progesterone, testosterone)
Proteins
serve as structural material, can be an energy source or even act as a hormone, their building blocks are amino acids
What are antibodies?
antibodies are proteins that detect and destroy foreign objects in the body
What are enzymes?
enzymes are proteins that catalyze chemical reactions
