Muscular System Flashcards
What are the types of muscle?
skeletal, cardiac, and smooth
What is skeletal muscle?
it is attached to the skeletal system, it can be controlled consciously, and it is striated (it has lines in it)
What is skeletal muscle composed of?
skeletal muscle tissue, nervous tissue, blood, and connective tissue
What are the names of the different connective tissues?
fascia, epimysium, perimysium, and endomysium
What is fascia?
layers of fibrous connective tissue, surround the outside of the muscle (organ) and separates it from other muscles, helps hold muscles in position, and it is almost everywhere in the body
What is epimysium?
it surrounds the outside of the muscle, fascia attaches to it in order to anchor it to other structures, it prevents friction between other muscles, and it is tighter to the muscle than fascia is
What is perimysium?
this connective tissue lies inside the muscle and separates it into small compartments, and these compartments contain bundles of skeletal muscle fibers called fascicles
What is endomysium?
the connective tissue that surrounds each individual muscle fiber in a fascicle, and this separation allows parts of the muscle to move somewhat independently
What are motor units?
a motor neuron and all of the muscle fibers it attaches to, one neuron can connect to multiple muscle fibers, when a neuron transmits an impulse all the muscle fibers attached to it contract simultaneously, and the more motor units that fire the stronger the contraction
What is stimulus for contraction?
does not contract until a neurotransmitter stimulates it, and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is released and stimulates the contraction
What is smooth muscle?
it lacks striations (lines), is not consciously controlled, and it contracts and relaxes slower than skeletal muscle
What are some examples of smooth muscle?
irises of the eyes, inside blood vessels, and inner anal sphincter
What is cardiac muscle?
it is only found in the walls of the heart, it contracts rhythmically (ergo the heart beat), and it is involuntary
