Muscles of Interest Flashcards
How many heads do the biceps brachii have?
2; the long head and the short head
Where does the bicep brachii originate?
on the scapula
Where does the bicep brachii insert?
on the radius
What are the main functions of the biceps brachii?
flexion of the elbow and supination of the forearm
How many heads do the triceps have?
3; long head, lateral head, and medial head
Where is the origin of the triceps?
scapula, back of the humerus
Where do the triceps insert?
ulna
What is the main function of the triceps?
elbow extension
Where does the Pectoralis Major originate?
clavicle, sternum, ribs
Where does the pectoralis major insert?
humerus
What are the main functions of the pectoralis major?
shoulder flexion, shoulder adduction, and shoulder internal rotation
Where does the trapezius originate?
the occipital bone and spines of cervical/thoracic vertebrae
Where does the trapezius insert?
clavicle, spine, and scapula
What are the main functions of the trapezius?
assists with keeping good posture, pulls scapula medially (towards the spine), and shoulder elevation (shrugging)
Where does the latissimus dorsi (lat) originate?
spines of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, the iliac crest (hip bone), and the lower ribs
Where does the lat insert?
the inter-tubercular groove of the humerus
What are the main functions of the lat?
arm extension/adduction, and it pulls shoulders down and posteriorly
What are the three sections of the deltoids?
the anterior deltoid (front delt), the lateral delt (side delt), and the posterior delt (rear delt)
What is the origin of the deltoid?
the scapula and the clavicle
What is the insertion of the deltoid?
the tuberosity of the humerus
What are the main functions of the deltoid?
abduction at the shoulder, flexion at the shoulder, and extension at the shoulder
What do the quads make up?
the front of the thigh
What are the muscles that make up the quads called?
the rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and vastus intermedius
What function do the quad muscles assist with?
extension at the knee
What three muscles make up the hamstrings?
the biceps femoris (which has 3 heads), the semitendinosus, and the semimembranosus
What do the three hamstring muscles assist with?
flexion at the knee
What is the origin of the calves?
the femur
What is the insertion of the calves?
the back of the heel
What are the main functions of the calves?
plantarflexion of the foot, and it assists with flexion at the knee
What are the two muscles that the calves are made up of?
the gastrocnemius and the soleus
What is the rectus abdominis?
the abdominal muscles
Where does the rectus abdominis originate?
lower ribs
Where does the rectus abdominis insert?
pubic symphysis
What are the main functions of the rectus abdominis?
trunk flexion, stabilization, and balance
