Cells Flashcards
Cell Membrane
surrounds the object in the cell, selectively permeable (determines what goes in and out), can bind to other cells
Cytoplasm
gel-like substance that suspends organelles, it contains rods and tubules that maintain framework
Ribosomes
responsible for protein synthesis, made up of protein and RNA
Endoplasmic Reticulum
transports molecules from one cell part to another, has rough ER (which contains ribosomes) and smooth ER (which supports lipid synthesis)
Golgi Apparatus
refines, packages, and transports proteins that have been synthesized (in vesicles), secretes proteins out of the cell through exocytosis
Mitochondria
the powerhouses of the cell, chemical reactions in the mitochondria make ATP
Lysosome
garbage disposal of the cell that contains powerful enzymes that break down nutrient molecules or foreign particles
Peroxisomes
houses chemicals that speed up reactions (like the production of bile acids) and are found in mainly the liver and kidney to detox alcohol
Microfilaments/Microtubules
help with maintaining cell structure
Centrosome/Centrioles
housed near nucleus and golgi apparatus, made up of two centrioles (that are made of microtubules), they distribute chromosomes to new cells during mitosis
Cilia/Flagella
assist with cell movement, cilia has small hair like fibers that help pass objects around the cell and flagella has a large tail that helps the cell itself move
Nucleus
houses the cell’s DNA, closed in a double layered nuclear envelope, has pores that allow certain molecules to exit the nucleus, contains nucleoplasm and chromatin
Chromatin
contains loosely coiled strands of DNA and protein that combine to make chromosomes, contains info for protein synthesis
