Organic Analysis Flashcards
How do you test for alcohols?
add potassium dichromate
What does a primary alcohol under distillation with potassium dichromate produce
primary alcohol with potassium dichromate under distillation produces an aldehyde
what colour does a primary or secondary alcohol go in the presence of potassium dichromate
orange to green
what does a secondary alcohol in acidic conditions under refulux produce
a ketone
does a tertiary alcohol produce a colour change when reacted with dichromate
it does not it remains orange
what does a primary alcohol produce under relfux conditions
a carboxylic acid
what do you use to test for an aldehyde and what is produced
a red precipitate is produced
to test you would use fehling’s or benedicts solution
what does tollen’s reagent produce with an aldehyde
a silver mirror is produced with an aldehyde
how do you test for carboxylic acids
add sodium carbonate to sample
if solution begins to fizz filter through limewater
if limewater goes cloudy it is carboxylic acid
how do you test for alkenes
add bromine water to sample and shake
if it goes from orange to clear alkene is present
