Organic - 3.6 Organic Analysis Flashcards

1
Q

How can mass spectrometry analyse organic compounds?

A

When a sample of an element passes through a mass spectrometer the spectrum produced consists of several lines. The lines are due to the different isotopes of the element.

The lines are due to the original molecule and fragments of the molecule. The line with the largest m/z ratio is known as the molecular ion.

Q

What is high resolution mass spectrometry used for?

A

Used to distinguish between compounds. It can measure relative atomic masses to 4 decimal places.

Q

How are molecules distinguished by the natural frequency of vibration of the bond?

A

A C-C single bond vibrates at a different frequency to a C=C band or an O-H bond. These vibrations have a frequency in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
