Organelles and Tissues Flashcards
Cell Membrane
Controls what goes into and out of the cell
Nucleus
Brain of the cell
Cytoplasm
Holds other organelles in place
Mitochondria
Makes energy (powerhouse)
Golgi Apparatus
Packages proteins
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Transports proteins
Ribosomes
Makes proteins
Lysosomes
Disposes of waste
Differentiation
The process in which a cell becomes specialized to perform a specific function
Nervous Tissue
Promoting electrochemical signals in the form of nerve impulses that communicate between different regions of the body (Brain, spinal cords, nerves)
Epithelial Tissue
Sheets of cells that cover the exterior surfaces of the body: Lining of hollow organs (intestines), Epidermis (skin)
Muscle Tissue
Responds to stimulation and contracts to provide movement, and occurs as three major types: Skeletal (voluntary), Smooth, Cardiac (heart)
Connective Tissue
Binds the cells and organs of the body together and functions in the protection, support, and integration of all parts of the body: Fat and other soft tissues, Bone, Tendons
Tissue Membranes
Thin layer or sheet of cells that cover the outside of the body, organs, internal passageways, and lining of moveable joint cavities: Connective tissue, Epithelial membrane
