Organelles Flashcards
a thick solution that fills each cell and is enclosed by the cell membrane. It is mainly composed of water, salts, and proteins
Cytoplasm
The semipermeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell.
Cell Membrane
an organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur.
Mitochondria
A minute particle consisting of RNA and associated proteins found in large numbers in the cytoplasm of living cells.
Ribosomes
A space or vesicle within the cytoplasm of a cell, enclosed by a membrane and typically containing fluid
Vacuole
A rigid layer of polysaccharides lying outside the plasma membrane of the cells of plants, fungi, and bacteria.
Cell Wall
A complex system of vesicles and folded membranes within the cytoplasm of most eukaryotic cells, involved in secretion and intracellular transport.
Golgi Apparatus
A microscopic network of protein filaments and tubules in the cytoplasm of many living cells, giving them shape and coherence.
Cytoskeleton
An organelle in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells containing degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane.
Lysosome
A minute cylindrical organelle near the nucleus in animal cells, occurring in pairs and involved in the development of spindle fibers in cell division.
Centriole
Its main functions are the synthesis of lipids, steroid hormones, the detoxification of harmful metabolic byproducts and the storage and metabolism of calcium ions within the cell.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Its mainfunction is to produce proteins
Rough Endoplastic Reticulum
A central organelle of a eukaryotic cell, containing most of the cell’s DNA
Nucleus
In green plant cells, a plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place.
Chloroplast
