Oral epithelium Flashcards
what forms the surface of the oral mucosa?
oral epithelium
mucosa : wet surface , made of :
epithelium
surface epithelium
underlying connective tissue
separating basement membrane
where is oral epithelium derived from ?
ectoderm (embryonic )
similar to skin
what type of epithelium is oral epithelium ?
stratified squamous epithelium
oral epithelium can be categorized into 2 main groups based on keratin . what are these 2 groups ?
keratinized and non-keratinized
wat are the 2 types of keratinized oral epithelium ?
ortho-keratinized : do not have any uncle or organelles
para-keratinized :pyknotic nucleus and other organelles remain in the keratinized layer
what are the layers of oral epithelium ?
keratinocytes and other scattered cells named nonkeratinocytes
what are the cell layers that are considered keratinocytes ?
basal cell layer ( stratum basal )
prickle cell layer ( stratum spinosum)
granular cell layer ( stratum granulosum )
keratin layer (stratum corner)
what is the basal cell layer?
first layer resting on basement membrane
cuboidal or low columnar cell
one single layer
very active in division ( maximum mitotic activity )
heals wounds
what is the prickle cell layer ?
several layer from polyhedral cells (cells with more than one side )
forms the most abundant type of cell in oral epithelium
called stratum spinous because they have desmosomes that have a spine like appearance when the cell shrinks during processing
basal cell layer and part of prickle cell layer can divide and renew defective epithelium . what are these cell layers referred to as?
stratum germinativum
what is granular cell layer ?
flat 3-5 cell layers that are prominent in keratinized epithelium and absent in non keratinized epithelium
they contain keratohyaline granules in their cytoplasm that help form the matrix of keratin fibers in superficial layer
what is the stratum corneum ?
flat and filled with keratin filament
continuously being desquamated and replaced by epithelium cells that migrate from underlying layers
what are some non keratinocytes present in the oral epithelium ?
scattered in between keratinocytes
there are 4 types :
melanocytes
mangerhans cells
Merkel cells
inflammatory cell
what are melanocytes , where are they located and what is its function?
responsible for secretion of melanin
scattered between basal cell layer
