6
Q

wat are the 2 types of keratinized oral epithelium ?

A

ortho-keratinized : do not have any uncle or organelles

para-keratinized :pyknotic nucleus and other organelles remain in the keratinized layer

8
Q

what are the cell layers that are considered keratinocytes ?

A

basal cell layer ( stratum basal )

prickle cell layer ( stratum spinosum)

9
Q

what is the basal cell layer?

A

first layer resting on basement membrane

cuboidal or low columnar cell

one single layer

very active in division ( maximum mitotic activity )

heals wounds

Q

what is the prickle cell layer ?

A

several layer from polyhedral cells (cells with more than one side )

forms the most abundant type of cell in oral epithelium

called stratum spinous because they have desmosomes that have a spine like appearance when the cell shrinks during processing

12
Q

what is granular cell layer ?

A

flat 3-5 cell layers that are prominent in keratinized epithelium and absent in non keratinized epithelium

they contain keratohyaline granules in their cytoplasm that help form the matrix of keratin fibers in superficial layer

13
Q

what is the stratum corneum ?

A

flat and filled with keratin filament

continuously being desquamated and replaced by epithelium cells that migrate from underlying layers

14
Q

what are some non keratinocytes present in the oral epithelium ?

A

scattered in between keratinocytes

there are 4 types :

melanocytes

mangerhans cells

Merkel cells

inflammatory cell

Q

all humans have same number of melanocytes , but activity is different .

A

..

17
Q

what are langerhans cells ? where are they present ? where do they come from , and what are its functions ?

A

can be found above the basal (supra basal)

derived from bone marrow

plays an important role in immune system as antigen presenting cell

18
Q

what is Merkel cell?

A

cells present in basal cell layer

they play an important role in neural sensation , especially touch

has desmosomes

19
Q

what are inflammatory cells ?

A

can be seen in oral mucosa

are mainly 3 types

20
Q

what are inflammatory cells ?

A

can be seen in oral mucosa

are mainly 3 types

plays an important role in defense against foreign bodies
