oral cavity and upper GI tract Flashcards
temporo-mandibular joint: explain the anatomy and explain the movements that occur during mastication, the muscles involved and their innervation
where does the head of the mandible bone articulate in
temporal mandibular fossa
what surrounds the temporal mandibular fossa
joint capsule
what lies anterior to temporal mandibular fossa
anterior tubercle of temporal bone
2 actions occuring at temporomandiblar joint in joint capsule between articular disc and head of mandible
if open jaw slightly (depress slightly), hinge action predominates; if open jaw widely (depress more), hinge and gliding action combine
where does gliding action occur
at anterior tubercle of temporal bone, so capsular joint moves forward slightly
what happens if jaw is opened too widely
anterior dislocation occurs at capsular joint
how anterior dislocation put back in place
push down and back with thumbs at back of bottom molars to get mandible back in place, due to presence of anterior tubercle of temporal bone (put something in mouth to prevent them biting down on thumbs)
