What does saliva contain?
Amylase, antibodies, lysozymes

Periodontal ligament

What are the three phases of swallowing?
Voluntary phase, pharyngeal phase, esophageal phase
What muscles tense and raise the soft palate?
Levator veli palatini (vagus n) and tensor veli palatini (trigeminal n V3)
What separates the superior constrictor muscle and the buccinator muscle?
Pterygomandibular raphe
Why is the pterygomandibular raphe clinically important?
Site for injection for superior alveolar nerve block
What is waldeyer’s lymphatic ring?
Palatine, pharyngeal, and lingual tonsils that initiate lymphatic response and all drain to deep cervical lymph nodes
What nerve is just lateral to the palatine tonsil?
Glossopharyngeal nerve
What does tensor veli palatini do?
Tenses soft palate, depressurizes middle ear
What does levator veli palatini do?
Elevates tensed soft palate, acts on pharyngotympanic tube
