Entropion
When the inner eyelid rolls in towards the eye
What can be an effect of an entropion?
Corneal ulcer or perforation
What is the treatment for entropion?
Inject saline into the eyelid
Simple interrupted sutures to tack down the eyelid
What is it called when there is a gap in the iris?
Eyelid coloboma
What is the surgical technique used for SCC removal?
Sliding flap technique
T/F: There are blood vessels in a healthy cornea
FALSE- should be no blood vessels in a normal healthy cornea
Makes the cornea an area for slow healing
What are the layers of the cornea?
Tear film- corneal epithelium - corneal stroma- descement’s membrane- endothelium
Inflammation of the cornea
Keratitis
What are CS of keratitis?
Blepharospasm
epiphora
corneal edema
cornea opacity
What are some diagnostic tests for keratitis?
Fluorescein test
What does the fluorescein test stain?
Stroma
Will not stain the descement’s membrane
If there is corneal vascularization in a circular/branching pattern, what surface was damaged?
Superficial surface
If there is corneal vascularization in a straight pattern, what surface was damaged?
Deep surface
What can be performed to help bring in more blood vessels to the area of a corneal ulcer to increase healing capability?
Conjunctival pedicle flap
What is the treatment for endopthalmitis?
Exenteration
What is the treatment for lens luxation?
Lens extraction
What is used to fill the anterior chamber to replace the lost aqueous humor?
Hyaluronic acid
What is the common name for equine recurrent uveitis?
Moon blindness
Uveitis
Inflammation of entire vascular tunic
What breed is equine recurrent uveitis commonly seen in?
Appaloosas
What are the clinical signs of acute equine recurrent uveitis?
PAIN Photophobia Blepharospasm Lacrimation Miosis Posterior synechiae
What is posterior synechiae?
Iris is attached to the anterior surface of the lens
Dilate the eye with atropine
What are the treatment options for equine recurrent uveitis?
Analgesics
Mydriatics-atropine + dark stall
Topical corticosteroids
Surgery: vitrectomy
