Abomasal Fistula/Volvulus Flashcards
What are the tx options for a LDA?
R flank omentopexy
L flank abomasopexy
R paramedian abomasopexy
Closed suture or bar techniques
What is an abomasal fistula?
This is a hole in the abomasum that leaks fluid into the abdomen causing the body to not heal and react by producing granulation tissue.
Acidic fluid from the abomasum prevents wound healing and leads to infection
What is the least reactive suture material?
Stainless steel
In what way does an abomasal volvulus typically twist?
Counter clock-wise from behind and clock-wise from the right side
What is the surgical correction for an abomasal volvulus?
Twist clockwise and perform a R flank omentopexy
A purse string should be placed around which layer of the abomasum when placing a stomach tube?
The seromuscular layer
In what directions do you push with your left forearm in order to move the abomasum clockwise?
Laterally, ventrally and caudally
Once the volvulus is correct, pull the omentum until you see which structure?
The pylorus
This is how you know the volvulus is corrected
What are three good prognostic indicators of post-op volvulus surgery?
Sternal
Good appetitie
Feces on the wall
What are you suspecting if you hear a “ping” in the R paralumbar fossa?
Cecal dilatation
What is the treatment for cecal dilatation?
Typhlotomy at the apex of the cecum
