Laparoscopy Flashcards
Laparoscopy
Procedure done with a laparoscope to look inside of the abdomen with a tiny camera
What are 3 pros and cons of a laparoscopy?
Pros: rapid return to function, relatively noninvasive, quick to perform
Cons: expense of equipment, skill of surgeon, video image is 2D (depth perception off)
T/F: You can use a laparoscopy procedure to assess an acute colic case?
FALSE- only used for chronic cases
What is the most common indication to perform a laparoscopy?
Cryptorchidectomy
What biopsy procedures use the laparoscopy procedure?
Liver, spleen and kidney
What type of needle is used for an abdominal tap?
Verres needle
What is used to treat pneumoperitoneum?
CO2- adding gas will cause the negative pressure to go away so all organs fall ventrally
Where are four cavities created when a patient has a pneumoperitoneum?
Right body wall and cecum
Cecum and mesentery
Left body wall and spleen
Spleen and mesentery
What are the landmarks for a standing laparoscopy?
Tuber coxae
Internal abdominal oblique muscle
18th rib
What should be used when performing a recumbent laparoscopy?
IPPV- abdominal organs will inhibit the diaphragm from moving up and down
What type of ligature is sued when performing a laparoscopy?
Roeder knot
What are three common post-op complications of a laparoscopy?
Post-op discomfort (CO2 mixes with abdominal fluid leading to carbonic acid formation, use banamine to take care of this)
Hemorrhage(caudal epigastric a/v)
Local incision infection
What are the dimensions of a laparoscope used for an adult horse?
Longer than 50 cm
30 degree angle
10 mm diameter
What is the most commonly accepted gas for abdominal insufflation?
Carbondioxide
What is the main disadvantage for using CO2 intra-op?
Turns to carbonic acid formation that can lead to irritation and peritonitis (post-op discomfort)
