Ophthal Terms Flashcards
1
Q
Anisocoria
A
- Size discrepancy between pupils
- 1 mm is physiologic
- Optic nerve issues
2
Q
Astigmatism
A
Ametropia- refraction of light defuse rather than focus due to abnormal horizontal curvature of the cornea and lens
3
Q
Photophobia
A
Abnormal intolerance of light
4
Q
Trichiasis
A
- Inversion of eyelashes
- Rub on cornea, cause irritation
5
Q
Miosis
A
- Abnormal contraction of pupil
- Pupillary constriction
6
Q
Mydriasis
A
Dilation of pupil
7
Q
Emmetropia
A
- Normal condition of eye in refraction
- Parallel rays focus exactly on retina
8
Q
Myopia
A
- Nearsighted
- Light focuses in front of retina
9
Q
Hyperopia
A
- Farsighted
- Light focuses behind the retina
10
Q
Presbyopia
A
- Loss of accommodation due to age > 40
- Inability to maintain focus on objects near to eye
11
Q
Anisometropia
A
- Unequal refractive power of the eyes. Different vision in eyes
12
Q
Ametropia
A
- Abnormal refractive condition- myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism
13
Q
Arcus senilis
A
- Benign peripheral corneal degeneration, bilateral
- Grey hazy ring around iris
- Hypertriglyceridemia, cholsterolemia
14
Q
Hyphema
A
- Collection of blood in anterior chamber, clot formation
- Commonly due to blunt trauma
15
Q
Hypopyon
A
- Collection of leukocytes in anterior chamber- settled in dependent portion of chamber
- Due to inflammation of iris- iritis
16
Q
Keratoconus
A
- Inherited bilateral degeneration of cornea
- Assoc. with Down, atopia, marfan
- Blurred vision to rapidly progressing myopic astigmatism
- Cone shaped eye
17
Q
Pterygium
A
- Fleshy triangular encroachment of pinguecula onto the cornea
- Usually nasal side
- Due to chronic irritation of UV light, dust, wind.
18
Q
Pinguecula
A
- Common in adults
- Yellow nodules on both sides of cornea
- Degenerative disease of conjunctiva
