- Absess on lid due to Staph
Hordeolum- Sx
- Acutely tender, localized, red, swollen lid
- Internal or external
Hordeolum- Tx
- Warm compress
- Incision and drainage if unresolved in 48 hrs
- Abx (bactraicin or erythromycin)
Dacryocystitis- Eti
- Acute: S. aureus, beta heme stept
- Chronic: S. epidermis, anaerobes, candida
- Infection of lacrimal sac
- Infants & > 40 yrs
Dacryocystitis- Sx
- Pain, swelling, tenderness & redness in tear sac
- Obstruction of nasolacrimal system
- Purulent discharge

- Systemic abx
- lacrimal drainage if necessary
Chalazion- Eti
- Granulomatous inflammation of meibomian gland
- Follows hordeolum
Chalazion- Sx
- Hard, non tender swelling on upper of lower lid
- Redness and swelling of adjacent conjunctiva
Chalazion- Tx
- Incision and curettage
- Corticosteroid injection
Ptosis- Eti
- Eyelid disease- Horner syndrome, third nerve palsy, myasthenia gravis
- Congenital or acquired
Ptosis- Sx
- Drooping of upper eyelid
- Unilateral or bilateral
- Pupil may be dilated or react poorly to light
Ptosis- Tx
- Observation
- Levitator muscle resection, frontal suspension
Entropian- Eti
- Inward turing of lid, commonly lower
- Degeneration of lid fascia
Entropian- Sx
Eyelid appears inward turned
Entropian- Tx
- Surgery if lashes rub on cornea
- Botox injections
Ectropian- Eti
Outward turning of lower lid
- Accompanies advanced age
Ectropian- Tx
Surgery if excessive tearing, keratitis or cosmetic issues
Blepharitis- Eti
Bilateral inflation of lid margins
- Anterior- eyelid skin, lashes and glands- Staph or seborrheic
- Posterior- Inflammation of meibomian glands- Staph, gland disorder, acne rosacea
Blepharitis- Sx
- Anterior- Red rimmed scales & granulation clinging to lashes
- Posterior- Hyperemic with telangiectasis. Mild entropion, frothy greasy tears
Blepharitis- Tx
- Anterior- Cleaning with baby shampoo and hot cloth
- Posterior- Gland expression, abx & corticosteroids
