Online Systems 13 Flashcards
What is cloud storage
Cloud storage is a method of storage where data is stored on remote servers, rather than on the user’s local computer or in an organisations own data centre/ server.
What is cloud computing
Cloud computing is when software is stored on remote servers and accessed by the users via a web browser.
Personal Use of Cloud Storage
Storing files such as photos and videos online e.g. to a OneDrive, iCoud etc. This means they are synced to all devices and accessible as long as the device can connect to the internet.
Professional Use of Cloud Storage
Storing off-site back-ups of business data to allow recovery in case of data loss. E.g. School backing up data to a cloud to be accessed anywhere in the world or for data loss. More secure not having a back-up in school in case that is lost also.
Business can access business data and documents anywhere in the world or share data via the cloud
Personal Use of Cloud Computing
Accessing graphics editing software, email software and home office software on a variety of devices without having to download the software. E.g. streaming apps like Word via Office365.
Professional Use of Cloud Computing
Accessing office applications and email without having to download software on all workstations.
Zoom is an example of cloud computing and so is Netflix. You are accessing a service/software over the internet.
Google also offers cloud computing services.
Advantages of Cloud Storage
Data can be accessed on the wide variety of devices used in the home
Software with specification requirements that are too high for a home computer can be easily accessed through cloud computing.
Disadvantages of Cloud Storage
Cloud storage and computing can make heavy use of bandwidth
Hackers could access and misuse personal photos or video on the cloud storage devices
Advantages of Cloud Computing
Off-site backups more physically secure e.g. safe from fire
A business can subscribe and unsubscribe to software according to changing needs
Organisations can save money as IT staff are not needed to manage software installations and less powerful hardware is required.
Disadvantages of Cloud Computing
Organisations have no control over the security of their back-ups, as that is controlled by the cloud storage company.
Privacy concerns over who can access the organisations data within the cloud storage company
Software is inaccessible if there is a network outage.
