Gaming
Learning Aids- e.g. MetaQuest and the Aquarium and Space Apps
Designing kitchens and bathroom via VR headsets with designers.
At Work
VR can be used by business to test products in virtual environments e.g. Car safety.
Healthcare- used for practising operations/ learning about the internal parts of the heart.
Film Production – Virtual Production – Unreal Engine
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
At Home
Alexa
Siri
Self-driving cars
Smart home assistants
Google Maps
At Work
AI can be used to help business forecasts when making decisions and the decision-making process e.g. stocks.
Robotics
At Home
vacuum cleaner robot-Roomba
Robot window cleaner- Gecko
Automatic Grill cleaning robot- Grillbot
Robot for pool cleaning- Nautilus
At Work
Cleaning - Industrial Floor Cleaners
Robots perform dangerous jobs without risk to life e.g., bomb disposal
Carry out routine tasks like in factories making car parts
Production lines - Arduino Braccio Robotic Arms
Healthcare- Can help perform surgeries
Biometrics
At Home
Phones or computers unlock- Facial recognition/FaceID
Used for visa applications (fingerprints & digital image of a face)
Fingerprint scanners for entry to safes & smart door locks.
At Work
Fingerprint mapping can help secure workplaces, letting staff in and keeping others out.
Airports use facial recognition software at passport checks.
Implications of emerging technologies
The Internet of Things allows your car to know where you are going and how to get there, and your fridge to pre-order your supplies, but this all needs data. Increasingly, advanced data-hungry technologies are placing a huge strain on existing infrastructure.
Society demands data whenever and wherever it likes- we are no longer confined to the home Wi-Fi network or the office LAN. Location-ware technologies and 3D imagery means that data access is essential to maintain and develop the emerging world of virtual reality and autonomous systems.
There are new ways of gathering data resulting in the emergence of “big data” which mean we need new ways on analysing it.
New ways of identifying ourselves through biometric data also beings the needs for greater and more powerful security.
