GIF
Small file size, but low quality due to limited number of colours. Can display basic transparency and animation. GIFs can be used for small animations and low-resolution video clips
JPEG
JPEG is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web. JPEG compression is used in a number of image file formats.
BMP
An uncompressed file format, so image quality is extremely high size is very large.
PNG
Uses lossless compression to save high-quality images in a low file size. Also allows transparency.
DOC/ RTF
Commonly used file formats for documents created using word processing software.
XLS
A common format for files created using spreadsheet software
MDB/ ACCDB
Common file types for database software
PPT
A common life shows created using presentation software
ODF
An open source XML based format used to represent office files such as spreadsheets, word processing
AVI
Uncompressed so is very high quality but very large file size. Not good for streaming
MP4
Supports high quality video while still compressing file size. Works on a variety of devices and software
MOV
Designed for use with apple quick time software but it can be played using other software.can provide high quality but can also be compressed. Good for streaming
MKV
Supports high quality video playback but is not well supported by some devices, eg iPads can’t play. MKV files
Compatibility issues
Some files may only work on certain software, the user may need to purchase new software. Sharing files with others may not be successful if they do not have the required software on their devises. Users might not need to install software on devices. Users might need to install software on devices which could cost money
Quality issue
Different image, video and file types provide a varying level of quality. Choice will depend on the intended use of the file. If a very high quality image file is needed then a BMP would be the suitable choice whereas if the image is needed for a website then a JPEG would be suitable as it is smaller in size for loading on webpages. Is high quality the priority or small file size?
