What are the Olympic aims?

A

To promote the development of those physical and moral qualities that are the basis of sport.

To spread the Olympic principles throughout the world, spreading international goodwill.

To bring together athletes of the world in the great 4-yearly sports festival.

To educate young people through sport in a spirit of better understanding between each other, and of friendship, thereby helping to create a better and more peaceful world.

A

The black power demonstration by Carlos and Smith after they came 1st and 3rd in the 200m.

Black gloves:
- Carlos wore it on his left hand, symbolised black power and unity in America
- Smith wore it on his right hand, represented black power in America

Black socks no shoes:
- represented black poverty in America

Why were the Munich Olympics significant?

A

8 Palestinian terrorists terrorists entered the Olympic village and seized 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team.

The terrorists requested that 234 Palestinians that were being imprisoned in Israel.

All 11 hostages and 5 terrorists killed when authorities attempted a rescue, 3 other terrorists injured.

Games were postponed one day for a memorial and flags were flown at half mast.
