What is an emergent leader?
A leader that comes up through the group either through skill level or through being selected by the group.
What are prescribed leaders?
Leaders that are selected by an external source.
What is an autocratic leader?
Dictatorial in style
They make the decisions and tend to have commanding and direct approaches.
They show little interest in the individuals in the group.
What is an autocratic leader?
Person oriented and value the views of other group members.
Share decisions and show a good deal of interest in individuals in the group.
What is a Laissaz-faire leader?
Make very few decisions and give very little feedback. The individual group members mostly do as they wish and decisions are made within the group.
When is an autocratic leader good?
When discipline and control are needed.
Novice performers, team players and males are generally seen to prefer this method of leadership.
When is a democratic leader good?
When group members wish to be involved in decision making.
Usually suits more advanced performers who have the knowledge to contribute.
Good in a ‘friendly’ match or social setting.
Females tend to prefer this style of approach.
When is a laissez-faire leader good?
Suitable for high level performers or elite athletes.
Helps to develop creativity for team members, or individuals and the leader has full trust in individuals capabilities.
(this style may be adopted if the leader is incompetent or is unable to employ any other style of leadership)
What is vicarious learning?
The person observes that a reward is given to another person for certain behaviours and learns to emulate that same behaviour.
