Olfactory & Gustatory ppt 27 Flashcards
What kind of neurons are olfactory neurons?
Bipolar Olfactory Sensory (receptor).
Where do axons and receptor meet? (olfactory)
Cribriform plate
Do olfactory neurons regenerate?
Yes
How are smell and tase processed?
Together
Unlike other cranial nerves the axons of the olfactory sensory neurons
Do not form a single nerve. Small clusters of these axons penetrate the cribriform plate and synapse in the ipsilateral olfactory bulb.
What kind of receptor is in olfactory transduction?
GPCR
What is the lateral olfactory area involved in?
the conscious perception of smell
What is the medial olfactory area involved in?
Visceral and emotional reaction to odors
What is the intermediate olfactory area involved in?
both medial and lateral
What is a common cause for damage to olfactory nerves?
Fractures of the cribriform plate
Fracture of the cribriform plate may result in
anosmia and cerebrospinal rhinorrhea
Types of Papillae & Function
Vallate- tastebuds
Fungiform- taste
Foliate- lateral taste
Filiform- friction
What taste transduction do salty and sour foods use?
Na+ Ion Fast
H+ Ion Fast
What taste transduction do sweet and bitter foods use?
G protein- cAMP- slow
G protein- PLC- slow
phospholipase c
What cranial nerves transmit taste?
CN VII, CN IX, and CN X from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, the posterior third of the tongue, the epiglottis, and the palate
