Oil System Flashcards
Oil Compacity (each engine)
2 liters (min) to 3 liters (max)
Oil Type
Aeroshell Sport Plus 4 Rotax Oil (ONLY)
Oil’s Main Purpose
Lubricate (Engine is primarily liquid and air cooled)
What type is the lubrication system?
engine is provided with a dry sump forced lubrication system with an oil pump with integrated pressure regulator.
How is the oil flow regulated?
Where does it go to?
What does this allow?
thermostatic valve regulates the oil flow to the heat exchanger (oil radiator) on the basis of oil temperature: this allows the engine starting in cold conditions.
Where is the oil tank installed?
How does ventilation work?
behind the firewall protected from heat sources. Some holes on the bracket structure allow for air ventilation
What’s the reservoir fitted with?
a dipstick; a hose, immediately located beneath the filler cap, allows for oil relief discharged in a safe zone in the cowling, far from exhausts and other heat sources.
How Does the Oil Flow?
Oil tank -> Heat Exchanger -> Oil Pump -> Oil Filter -> Engine Components -> Oil Tank (Via Blowback Gasses)
How does the oil travel from the tank to the engine?
Pressure created by the engine driven oil pump
Why must pilots rotate the propeller during pre-flight?
Rotating the propeller forces oil through the system and is required to
accurately check oil quantity.
What indicates that oil has been pumped through the system?
A murmur from the open oil tank.
