Four means of Transmission

Puncture wounds result from
- Used Needles

Mucous Membrane Contact
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation or eye splashing with infected fluids, such as:
- Blood
- Sputum
- Oral secretions
- Nasal secretions
AIDS
affects the immune system weakened immune system can’t fight off infections and diseases
HAV - Hepatitis A
-Affects the liver -transferred through feces: contact with objects, food -can live outside body for months -vaccine yes
HBV- Hepatis B
-affects the liver: acute or chronic infection -Transferred through blood,semen, or other infected body fluid -vaccination yes
HCV- Hepatitis C
-affects liver: acute or chronic infection -transferred through contact with infected -no Vaccine
Hepatitis symptoms
- fever
- fatigue
- loss of appetite
- nausea or vomiting
- abdominal pain
- dark urine
- jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes
Bacterial Meningitis
- severe
- inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord
- transferred through contact with infected saliva
- vaccine for some causes
Standard Precautions for Body Substance Isolation (BSI):
- assume that all patients are potentially infected with blood borne pathogens
- use protective equipment
- always wear approved gloves, and change gloves after contact with each patient
- wash your hands with soap and water
- always wear a protective mask, eyewear or face shield should you come into contact with blood
- Do not recap, cut or bend needles (place in sharps container)
