Environmental Emergencies (Chapter 13) Flashcards
When a person is exposed to excess heat, the body’s mechanisms for regulating temperature can be overwhelmed, resulting in:
- Heat Cramps
- Heat Exhaustion
- Heat Stroke
Heat Cramps
Spasms of the muscles: dehydration
Heat Exhaustion
- Exposed to temperature greater than 80 degrees
- Monitor CAB’s
Heatstroke
- Subjected to more heat than it can handle
- When somebody stops sweating, they’re at a point of heat stroke
- Internal temperatures as high as 106 degrees
Cold Environments = what two things?
Frostbite and Hypothermia
Hypothermia
when a person’s body temperature drops to less than 95 degrees
*if they stop shivering, it becomes an issue and you should monitor for CAB’s
Drowning
suffocating because of submersion in water or in other fluids
What is first priority when entering a scene?
Scene Safety
Lightning Injuries
the electrical injury resulting from a lightning strike can cause cardiac irregularities or cardiac arrest —> the patient’s diaphragm will get paralyzed
