How else do you identify Oesophagostomum spp.?
In large intestine
L4 - nodules in large and small intestine wall
Species
- O. dentatum - O. quadrispinulatum - At least 3 other species
Describe the life cycle
Infective L3
Arrested L4 in small and large intestinal wall
Females lay large number of eggs
Egg -> L3 = 10 days
Low motility to L3
L3 survive on pastures
PPP: 3-8 weeks
What is the site of infection for adults?
Lumen of large intestine
Where are L4 found?
In the wall of the small and large intestine
Describe the Pathogenesis
Nodules in large intestine wall (less with O. dentatum)
Age immunity not strong (results in accumulation in older animals)
Low EPG - clinical signs pre-EPGI
What are the general clinical signs?
Anorexia
Enteritis
What are the clinical signs in ruminants?
Anorexia
Diarrhea
What are the clinical signs in sows?
Anorexia
Weight loss
Reduced milk production
Together with Hyostrongylus - “poor sow syndrome”
What are the clinical signs in acute disease?
Rise in temperature
Diarrhea
Rapid dehydration
What are the clinical signs in chronic disease?
Food/water consumption decreases
Diarrhea - putty-like to mucopurulent, green, putrid smelling
Intussusceptions
What are the clinical signs in clinical disease?
Inappetance
Weight loss
Reduced milk production
Rarely accompanied by diarrhea
How do you diagnose?
Clinical signs
Egg counts - L3
- Not in acute disease since not yet patent - Present in chronic disease
Necropsy
