Earthworm
Dung beetles

3 lips
Describe the eggs
Yellowish
Round
70 micro m
Pitted
Thick shelled
Mammilated
What is important about Ascaris suum?
Zoonotic
Describe the life cycle
2 modes of infection
- Per os - Paratenic Host
Egg -> Egg with L2: 1-3 months
Egg lasts 10 years
PPP: 6-8 weeks
What is the site if infection?
Small intestine
Describe the Pathogenesis
Associated with both outdoor and indoor production
Problems attributed to ascarids
Indoor systems
- Resistance of egg to disinfectants combined with number laid by
females
- Makes it difficult to rid facility of ascarids
Outdoor systems
- Earthworms/dung beetles - reservoirs - Older animals develop immunity
Heavy infections transient
Pneumonia (
What are the clinical signs?
Migration of L3 in liver causes lesions - “White spots”, “Milk spots”
- Result in liver condemnation at slaughter
Transient pneumonia - L3 migration
Poor feed conversion
Slower weight gains
Intestinal obstruction
How do you diagnose?
Fecal flotation
How do you treat and prevent?
Associated with outdoor and indoor systems
Most persistent and resistant even in modern facilities
Reduce/eliminate source; treat/wash sows pre-farrowing
Treat piglets at weaning
Use feed-through Anthelmintics
