What is obstructive sleep apnoea

A

Tongue, tonsils, soft palate rarely can collapse -> complete AW obstruction when tone reduced in sleep -> transient O2 dip + subconscious arousal hundreds of times a night -> unrefreshing sleep, daytime sleepiness + snoring

What is a hypopnea

A

Partial obstruction
>10 seconds >30% redution in flow + desturation >4%

Reasons for waking

A

chemoreceptors sense drop of oxygen → kick of adrenaline to stimulate rep muscles + wake up a little to open AW

Alos → tachycardia, swings in BP

Symptoms of OSA

A
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Snores or stops breathing overnigth
  • Dropping off during the day
  • Increased BMI and larger neck sizes
    • Craniofacial abnormalities or narrow nasopharynx
