Obligate anaerobes Flashcards
1
Q
What are obligate anaerobes?
A
Bugs that lack catalase and/or superoxide dismutase and are thus susceptible to oxidative damage.
2
Q
Name the 3 obligate anaerobes.
A
Anaerobes Can’t Breathe Air
- Clostridium
- Bacteroides
- Actinomyces
3
Q
What are the characteristics of obligate anaerobes?
A
- Generally foul smelling (short-chain fattty acids)
- Difficult to culture
- Produce gas in tissue (CO2 and H2)
4
Q
Are anaerobes normal flora in GI tract?
A
yes, but pathogenic elsewhere
5
Q
Why is aminoglycoside ineffective against anaerobes?
A
B/c AminO2glycoside are ineffective against anaerobes b/c these antibiotics require O2 to enter into bacterial cell.
