what are the predisposing factors contributing to physical abuse?
Environment/Social
poverty, unemployment, dysfunctional family, financial crisis, chronic
stress increased between children & parents as seen in over crowded
living quarters, spans across all societal income levels
Child
disabled, temperamental, hyperactive, foster/stepchild,
illegitimate/unwanted child
Characteristics of Parent
History of abuse as a child, socially isolate with little supportive
relationships, low self-esteem, overworked/overwhelmed, uneducated,
substance abuse
This is the most common form of maltreatment
Defined as failure of parent /guardian to provide for child’s
basic needs & adequate level of care
This can be a physical or emotional neglect
Physical= deprivation of life’s necessities
Emotional= failure to meet needs for affection, attention
& emotional nuturing
child neglect
An act performed on child for sexual gratification of the
perpetrator. Perpetrator often uses
sexual abuse
of any child to engage in sexually explicit conduct
for producing any visual depiction of such conduct via rape,
molestation, prostitution or incest
coercion
physical sexual activity between blood or nonblood
relatives & child
incest
touching, fondling, single or mutual
masturbation
molestation
indecent exposure
exhibitionism
Intentional omission of verbal or behavioural action that
are necessary for development of a healthy self esteem
Can include social, emotional or spiritual hard

what are the warning signs of abuse?
repeated physical injuries
conflicting stories
injury blamed
history inconsistent
inappropriate response of caregiver that is an exaggerated response
neglect or delay in seeking medical attention for child or failure to obtain immunization
Child seems overly upset about being discharged must be
brought to attention of health care provider
what are the stages of brusing?
1 to 2 days – swollen and tender
0 to 5 days – red/purple
5 to 7 days – green
7 to 10 days – yellow
10 to 14 days – brown
14 to 28 days – clear
