Nutrition in animals Flashcards
Heterotrophic nutrition
Process by which the organisms obtain nutrition by other organisms or by substances derived from them.
Holozoic nutrition
Where they ingest food in to their alimentary canal.
Main stages in holozoic nutrition
ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation and elimination/ Egestion
What are the Feeding Mechanisms of animals
Filter feeders - bivalves
Fluid feeders - mosquitoes suck blood from humans, aphids suck phloem sap, bees and humming birds suck honey from flowers
Substrate feeders - leaf miner caterpillar living in soft tissues of plant, maggots (fly larvae)
Bulk feeders
Bivalves
Clams and oysters
They belong to the phylum mollusca but radula is absent in them because they are filter feeders.
Symbiosis
This is an ecological relationship between organisms of two different species that live closely together.
3 types of symbiotic relationships
Mutualism
Parasitism
Commensalism
Animal nutrition
Process by which food is taken in for make use in different body functions
Mutalism
Cellulose digesting microorganisms in ruminants and termites
Commensalism
Barnacles on whales
Parasitism
Humans and lies
Tapeworm and humans
