Normal Gait Flashcards
standing human body + coordinated movement
Locomotion
Center of gravity passes
Usually between metatarsal heads and heel
Swing phase of gait cycle
When given extremity remains off the ground
Stance phase of gait cycle
Portion of gait cycle when extremity remains on the ground
Holding joint immobile to avoid full range of motion
Antalgic Gait
If injury is on the right, will spend less time on the right
Purposes of Gait Aids
To unload
To support
To balance (increase base)
Axillary crutch
most proximal, can cause vascular or neurologic injury (axillary artery, brachial plexus posterior cord)
Platform crutch
mimimizes stress to hands, wrist
Lofstrand crutch
forearm cuff allows use of hands
Deficient Anterior Tibial Compartment Gait
slap foot gait, steppage gait
weakness in dorsiflexion, inadequate control of plantar flexion
Femoral neuropathy leads to
Quadriceps deficient gait (back knee gait)
How does steppage gait compensate?
hiking hip (increase hip flexor, knee flexor)
Quadriceps deficient gait
throughout stance, knee must be locked into hyper extension by compensatory G-max on thigh, on soleus (hand on thigh)
Spastic Hemiplegia Gait
Cause
Compensation
Lower limb lengthened by hip + knee extension
Compensation via elevation of pelvis on involved side
Standing is passive except for
Plantarflexion
