hands, shoulders, hips, knees –> usually symmetric, bilateral
Features of Osteoarthritis
Subchondral cysts, subchondral sclerosis, osteophytes, space narrowing
Imaging must-haves
two orthogonal views
one joint above, one joint below
Suspect Child Abuse if…
metaphyseal corner/bucket handle fractures, periosteal hemorrhage, periosteal elevation
Osteomyelitis on radiography
Destruction of bone at infection site!
Also:
Periosteal reaction
Soft tissue swelling
+/- Sub-cutaneous air
Brodie’s abscess
Chronic sub-acute abscess of bone, surrounded by dense fibrous tissue + sclerotic bone
What contibutes to the uniform space narrowing in RA?
Synnovitis –> all over inflammation
Transverse fracture
at a right angle to the long axis of the bone
Oblique fracture
in oblique direction to the long axis of the bone confined to one plane
Spiral fracture
in oblique direction to the long axis of the bone in multiple planes
